Silicon nitride

Unequaled properties – Rauschert’s silicon nitride is charecterized by its special combination of properties

Silicon nitride belongs to the group of non-oxide ceramics and stands out due to its special combination of its properties, which are remarkably high strength and toughness, low thermal expansion, good thermal conductivity, high hardness and outstanding high resistance to chemicals. Due to its unique combination of properties, silicon nitride is used – especially when compared to other advanced ceramics – where highest mechanical stress and/or extreme thermal stress occur.

Silicon nitride

Production & properties

Components made of silicon nitride (Si3N4) are manufactured out of a powder mixture, consisting of silicon nitride and sintering additives. Sintering at high temperatures and with high gas pressure leads to a densification and a needle-shaped recrystallization of the silicon nitride particles. The result is a strong cross-linked structure, which confers high strength and toughness on the material.

Sintered components can be processed with diamond tools which results in a high surface quality and dimensional accuracy.

Applications

Due to its unique combination of properties, silicon nitride is used – especially when compared to other advanced ceramics – where highest mechanical stress and/or extreme thermal stress occur.

Typical applications are, amongst others: rolls for roller bearings, centering and fixing elements in the field of welding, components for direct contact with melts in the non-ferrous metallurgy and aluminium production (pipes, thermocouple protection tubes, etc.), different components for wafer handling and heating in the semi-conductor manufacture, bearing elements for different applications and high speeds as well as sterilizable components for medical technology.
